Ilustration As Books The Egyptian (Sinuhe egyptiläinen #1–2)
The only Finnish novel adopted into a Hollywood filmMika Waltari's 1945 novel The Egyptian was turned into a DeLuxe Color epic film by 20th Century Fox in 1954 and was nominated for an academy award a year later.
A 1940s #1 Bestseller and a Historic Novel All-Time FavoriteA historic novel all-time favorite, after its translation in English from Swedish, The Egyptian topped the bestseller charts in 1949 and the years following.
The protagonist of the novel is the fictional character Sinuhe, the royal physician, who tells the story in exile after Akhenaten's fall and death. Apart from incidents in Egypt, the novel charts Sinuhe's travels in then Egyptian-dominated Syria, in Mitanni, Babylon, Minoan Crete, Mitanni, and among the Hittites.
The main character of the novel is named after a character in an ancient Egyptian text commonly known as The Story of Sinuhe. The original story dates to a time long before that of Akhenaten: texts are known from as early as the 12th Dynasty.
Much concerned about the historical accuracy of his detailed description of ancient Egyptian life forced the author to carry out considerable research into the subject. The result has been praised not only by readers but also by Egyptologists.
Waltari had long been interested in Akhenaten and wrote a play about him which was staged in Helsinki in 1938. World War II provided the final impulse for exploring the subject in a novel which, although depicting events that took place over 3,300 years ago

I have to say, I was apprehensive when I approached this book. I knew nothing about it in advance except that it's supposed to be some kind of literary classic written in the 1940s. I expected it to be ponderous, boring, high-minded and stuffy. But, book in hand, I thought "why not", took a deep breath, gritted my teeth and dove in. To my surprise I found that this book is anything but boring and stuffy. It is, above all, an entertaining and very human tale that makes ancient Egypt feel like aAbsolutely amazing. The most vivid and memorable book I can recall reading in recent memory. My favorite portrayal of Akhenaten, and one of the best depictions of ancient Egypt I've had the pleasure of digesting. The only issue I had with it was that it did occasionally drag in parts, and there were some overlong descriptions of, for instance, how Sinuhe earned his wealth through the power of real estate, but overall this was just... wow. 10/10, would recommend.
Longish classics are somewhat problematic: you'll be happy to buy them (especially if they are beautiful editions such as this), but they often end up spending years without reading just sitting on your shelf glaring at you disapprovingly with other accumulated peers (at least that's what it feels like to me). When you finally gather the willpower to start reading them (it is after all much easier to start a 300 page book than, say, 779 page one), there is always the possibility that you find

One of the best historic novels I have read so far. Simple yet profound illustration of the religious and political conflicts during the Pharoah Akhenaton's reign, founder of one of the earliest monotheistic religion. The story revolves around the travels and expeditions of a Egyptian physician named Sinuhe and the socio-political scenario of the countries he visits during his life. The journey of this physician is so eventful with cruelty of humans, fragility and wickedness of human mind, love
The Egyptian is one of the finest Egyptian historical fictions ever written. At the same time, the author, Mika Waltari, crafted an adventure novel filled with philosophical overtones that leaves the reader pondering the meaning of life. And thats what the book is about: an Egyptians entire life, lived during an era of historic and religious upheaval.Sinuhe, the protagonist, puts idealism above all else, to the destruction of everything he loves. At the same time, he has a huge character flaw:

A Captivating Tale!If you enjoy reading about Egypt during the 14th century, you should find this a fascinating read. For the most part I found it quite captivating and was totally immersed in the story, especially the bond developing between the main character Sinuhe and his slave Kaptah. Their story alone is well worth the read. I did find some parts repetitive and lengthy which was to some extent disappointing. But overall it was extremely well written with several strong characters
