I enjoyed the various threads spun in this book. A bit predictable, but it is Star Wars. The story provided some background for future events and some of the main SW characters, such as Mara and her bad self, and it also gave the stormies a warm fuzzy lovable side.Meh.1. I don't like stormtroopers.2. I don't like books that go back in to fill in the spots between movies or other books.Obviously best to leave some things on the library shelf.While this was an entertaining caper with lots of interlacing threads, it leaned too heavily on two things - the reader being invested in the characters already and being to accept stormtroopers as "heroes".The problem with the first bit is that this book is set shortly after A New Hope, so yeah, Leia, Luke, Han,
Time period: After the new hope but before The Empire Strikes Back.It was fun to see the relationship between Luke, Han, Leia, Chewy, and etc... I really enjoyed it but giving it 4/5 only due to the slow build up.
Zahn pulls off yet another good Star Wars story, with a few writing blunders (which is the biggest reason for only 4 stars).Zahn's stories and characterizations are obviously his strong points, which is perfect for Star Wars because the series is so character driven. Timothy Zahn is my absolute favorite author so when I saw this book about Mara Jade in the Empire era I jumped.Plot:There are three plots that intertwine towards the end. LaRone, a stormtrooper, accidentally kills an ISB agent. He and four other stormtroopers desert and run to the nearest planet where they begin an investigation into pirate activities.Mara Jade was sent to investigate a Moff's possible embezzlement. Timothy Zahn + Star Wars = an excellent read in my book. It was great to see Mara in action as the Emperors Hand and the book really delved into areas that most during the Rebellion novels seem to miss. This book was about people rather than a mission, with the characters' individual missions almost seeming second rather than the main focus of the novel. As big a fan as I am of Star Wars, one thing I always had a problem with was the intentional dehumanization of the Imperial Troops. Most of course were nigh-faceless Stormtroopers, and many of the rank and file units were glossed over, leaving only the higher ranked officers who were portrayed as sniveling, overconfident, incompetent, and generally detached from any sense of "service" or "duty" (with the notable exceptions of Daine Jir, General Veers, and Captain/Admiral Piett).
