This is what happens when someone with the word-power of one of the best of the best has a go at letting fly at a young age. You get the tidal wave, this sledge-hammer, this avalanche of feeling and injustice and raw emotion that Die Räuber is. Loved it when I was eighteen and preparing my final matric exams, loved it now that I reread it since my son chose it for his own final matric exams. Who cares if you he has to take a number of crazy short-cuts in the end the power of the speeches is soThe various ideas and the depth and rapture of feelings that this drama reveals to the reader deserve 5 stars. The character building and some of the situations are somewhat forced and one sided. The tragedy of human condition in perpetual conflict between individuality as self and as a part of a collectivity is masterfully depicted. "The Robbers" provides an excellent insight into the nobility and wickedness of the man's soul.
I don't know whether I like this play or really like itIt's somewhere in the middle. I love the characters and the story. the dialogue was eh, and the development of the characters was eh too. One thing I liked was the characters and their characterizations. The Robbers is like a Shakespeare Tragedy times 10.The moral themes are bigger, the taboos are more shocking and the stress and pain the characters go through are very personal and heavy. Franz and Karl are opposites, and either you like one

Oh dear where to start with this play? First of all, Im nearly crying in a café as I type this. This play, mm, yes. Okay. One of the best, if not the best drama that I've ever read. It was a part of my schoolwork reading, but I've grown fond of it during the later years. So much so that I've even put it on my top 10 list and it's hardly going off the shelf, as it's difficult to find drama that describes injustice and cruelness of society better than this one.
